Allotment ~update June

At last all is planted and now growing well in our allotments.

Looking up the plot from the shed..

The month of May has been up and down with the weather and it began with some chilling winds which didn’t do our newly planted sweetcorn any good.. We thought we might have lost it as it turned very pale yellow and the leaves began to die back.. but then some Sun shines and Magic happens.

Sweet corn has now got much bigger now the chill winds have stopped

We have both been busy weeding, it seems no amount of chill keeps the weeds from flourishing and between us we have kept it pretty much clear.

I wanted some flowers in the allotments this year so I grew some Asters from seed and the canes are my granddaughters Sunflowers.. there are more seeds in the ground.. but these were her special ones she grew in pots.

Here she is laughing she wanted to gather up the potatoes her granddad had dug up and put them into a bag.. She even allowed a spider to crawl over her hand as it ran across them.. I was so pleased she showed no fear of it.. ( I am trying to teach her how everything has a place in the garden.. as the spiders eat the flies etc ) And that all creatures have a right to life..

I hope all of your gardens are doing well?..

Happy Gardening

  1. Beautiful gardens you have there My Friend 🙂
I am working on the yard here to turn it into a Fall garden…
we have had so much rain, lots of the leaves on the passion vine and roses are yellow, chlorotic
though they are coming back…the Pecan trees I planted for my sisters are doing wonderful in this rain though, the first two years are so important to them with water and nutrients…
more rain today, hopefully I get the porch’s Kiltz on before
    it does 🙂
Hope all is well in your world….

  2. It looks like everything is right on track for this year Sue :). It’s a very cold winter (for Australia) this year and we are preparing for a long dry summer. I managed to find big round bales of wheat straw for $30 (about 14 pounds) and stocked up so that I can mulch everything this year well. The white fly have been doing magnificently. They are SO happy in their new found haven (Sanctuary) that they refuse to go somewhere else for the winter and despite the -3C temperatures are still hovering around. I am going to have to find a serious white fly pest control measure this year as well as how to stop the bush rats from eating anything worth eating. This gardening lark is hard work! 😉

    • Yes the white fly here are having a field day on my lettuce.. But so far have kept off the brasicas . The Black fly are feasting off my Dahlia’s and we are going to have to mix a solution to spray on them.. ( none toxic ) .. I have been looking around sites for alternative mixtures to create which are found affective..
Sorry your winter is colder than normal.. We are set to have a heat wave this week.. Its raining at the moment.. but forecast to reach a high of 27 in the midlands where we are and 33 in London.. So we will be in the garden early when its cooler.
Thank you so much for visiting.. I came by your new blog either last week or maybe week before.. ( time just flies ) to see if anything was new..
Yes Gardening doesn’t get any easier especially when the muscles start protesting.. And hubby had a bad back and now a bad knee… but we keep going! 🙂 as you do.. :-D..

      • Still working on something to minimise the white fly. I have been reading up on them and it seems they are not going to be easy to eradicate but I like a good challenge. I think I will put yellow sticky traps on Earl and Bezial and let them run wild inside Sanctuary for a few weeks in a row before I get the garden ready for spring planting. Best of luck surviving THAT whitefly! 😉

        • Ha ha…just imagining that makes me smile.. LOL…. I am a bit miffed at the moment.. I had loads of red currents on my netted bush yesterday morning and was going to pick them Monday as I was going to let them ripen a bit more.. We went down the allotments this afternoon and It appears we have a new kind of bird with 2 legs and hands that can lift nets from secure nails and strip the whole bush squeaky clean…. ( I was going to make red current jelly ) arrrh well… seems we have some new allotmenteers who don’t know the rules of gardening!…
It’s sad that people can do that.. but I suppose there are worse things that happen at sea as the saying goes..

We have our suspicions but no proof.. Some newbies two allotments down, others too have had things go.. And only since they arrived… Such is gardening in open spaces when others have an allotment gate key who do not have the same principles as we do.. I have chilled out now.. I wish It had been the birds who had taken them.. but the whole bush of heavy berries was just cleaned out..
needless to say I picked the gooseberries which are now ripe.. And I am buying more nets for the loganberries tomorrow.. Im not going to make it easy for who ever flies by!!
Sending love your way, and if you manage to mix a good white fly cure.. would be interested in seeing what works best Fran..
          Love and Hugs ❤ Sue

          • That sucks Sue! Where do people think that they can get off stealing from their fellow allotmenteers? I wonder how they would feel if their personal crops accidentally go “missing” when they eventually grow eh? I doubt anyone will be listening to their protestations by that stage. People who can’t keep their hands to themselves and share space with other people are one of my pet peeves. I would be setting up one of those cheap cameras (go-pro?) that record to find out who is doing the pinching. I hope it doesn’t carry on. If you all have your suspicions can you take it to the allotment owners/board?

            • We know who are thieving as we have seen where some pipes we had were taken.. And yes we have mentioned it to the powers that be.. But they are some relation.. so nothing will be done..
The rule is if you are caught stealing you are off the allotment full stop.. I could say alot more.. But not here.. but I am trying to send positive vibes their way.. I intend to ‘grid’ the allotment with crystals for protection.. You may laugh, but its worked in the past when we had problems..

Today I bought 3 large nets and spent all morning rigging them around the Loganberries.. No birds can get in.. So we will see what size boots these birds wear. LOL..
Smiled at your suggestion of the camera.. I said to hubby we could do with one of those wild life cameras that are motion activated.. LOL.. It will be when the crops start maturing it will get worse.. We never twigged on last year when a load of onions went and we pulled garlic and left by the side of the shed on the water barrel tops to dry.
Never mind…those around us are all altering our visiting habits and turning up later in the evening too as thats when they come around… The word is out and we are all now being vigilant.

            • It is terribly sad that it has to come to people monitoring what is, effectively, a trust system and that the powers that be are actually condoning it by their lack of action. Whatever works is my motto. You would be amazed at what I would do to get rid of my whitefly! ;). Good luck and here’s to catching thieves with their hands full eh?

  4. Magical world of wonderment Sue, absolutely gorgeous, beautiful to see everything starting to bloom and thrive, your new potatoes sound delicious an ideal for boiling, how about a close up of one of them, Ana has taught me what Kale looks like now, but nothing from the supermarkets have a chance next to your great produce. Lovely to see the little garden Fairy holding the potatoes, she continue her Grandmothers tradition of oneness with nature.
