As promised I will tell you what I have been up to this will take the form of Two posts over the next couple of days,  and I will let the pictures tell their own story.

We were lucky enough to buy a second hand greenhouse recently, it had a few panes of glass missing.. but it was a great bargain not to be missed.

Both Hubby and I erected the frame.. The sides are up!

I now have 3 trays such as this ripening in the greenhouse. These tomatoes were grown outdoors among the veggies, and as its going colder would not finish ripening without help .. Looks like chutney is on the menu :-)

The Greenhouse complete with glass and sheets of hard plastic which hubby cut to size to fill in the panes which were missing. Tomatoes are ripening in trays at the bottom. These were just grown in the allotment and there will be lots for Chutney I think :-)

This is because the  shared path has an almost 1 and a Half foot drop onto our allotment side and if you were to slip!!? So Health and Safety first!..

The allotments are looking bare, in the forground are my wallflowers which are for my home garden. I just hoed through this.. Isn't it weed free :-)

  1. In 6 weeks I will get all of the time I want in my garden. In the next day or so I will be potting up all of this years seeds to grow for our coming season. We have been told it is going to be long, dry and hotter than average which means we should be able to ripen some of the eggplants, tomatoes and chilli’s this year so I have bought seed accordingly. I stuck with the Japanese finger eggplants as otherwise the globe kind most probably won’t ripen. Excellent score on the glasshouse by the way and good call on the Health and Safety 🙂

    • Oh I am thrilled it’s given you an idea of how to do work around your own garden.. 🙂 Yes these slabs were in front of the large shed.. so we have to rethink now what we are doing there.. We laid them there on black polythene so as the weeds wouldn’t come through.. And would pull up our chairs for a break in gardening on them.. It needs still a lot of work to shape it how I want it to be in my head..
      Hubby is giving me more free reins to do more in the planning and setting in the Spring.. so we will see 🙂 ❤

  5. What a lovely big allotment you have Sue and that greenhouse is going to be so useful in your uncertain weather. My Dad had a greenhouse (he also had an allotment, sadly he died when I was 10) he was a very good gardener and I think that is where I got my love of gardening from.

    • Pauline, how sad to have lost your Dad at such a young age.. I am sure you will have inherited his Love of Gardening, and no doubts he whispers in your ear the tips for growing LOL too :-).. Yes we have a greenhouse at home in our home garden which we grow most of our tomatoes in.. This next year I want to plant on more veggies in smaller quantities at staggered intervals, so they do not all mature at once.. And once the tomato season is underway, the home greenhouse is then full of tomatoes .. So I hope to keep seedlings growing longer from home to transplant.. 🙂 that’s the idea anyways 🙂

  8. I am still amazed at the large parcel of land you have for an allotment. You must be plain tuckered out after hoeing all that! I inspected my gardens this afternoon and still have about 20 more tomatoes that need to ripen and half that number of bell peppers. The one that I almost missed because I thought it was too late were strawberries! There were three ripe and ready to eat. I shared them with the neighbor boy who came over to help.

    • If you wait until the ground is pretty dryish before hoeing its not so bad, I then rake up the larger weeds and the smaller ones die back on their own once uprooted.. The hardest work was some years ago getting all of the twitch/grass roots out.. That’s why if you look at the sides of our allotment you see we dig down so the grass path does not encroach 🙂

  9. Impressive all round Sue, your greenhouse looks great and the gardens beautifully weed free, a great achievement that must have been hard work, your enthusiasm shows through.
    I think you would have had your tomatoes in the greenhouse before it was erected.

  10. You have quite a lot of property to use, Sue…how nice. I love the greenhouse you bought and put up…such lovely “rooms” they make. It reminded me of my grandmother’s nursery business she had when I was a child. I loved visiting there and exploring all the greenhouses she had. She passed her green thumb down to my father and then to me. I love gardening but since I live with my daughter now, I leave most of that to her and her boyfriend. She has now inherited that green thumb too. It’s nice to see that love of growing things being passed down. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work through your photos…it’s fun to see.

    • Thanks Gayle, Allotments are rented plots of land which are specific for growing veggies..We are lucky in ours is only a 5 min walk from our home. 🙂 And these plots are quite large compared to many.. Its lovely we all seem to remember our Grands and Granddads with their gardening skills… I hope to pass the love of gardening to my granddaughter.. She loves to dig 🙂 with spade and bucket 🙂

    • Thank you Jo… Yes we spend several hours on there today and we managed to hoe it all up and is well worth all of the effort.. It grounds me and I feel alive when working in it :-).. The blog hasn’t been going all that long.. I did is as Dreamwalker’s is fast filling up with all the photo updates I did about it on there, so I thought I would start one here and then use a link to share the photo’s etc.. so far its working out ok.. but I get behind often on both blogs, but as the allotment winds down, my time should be more to visit here and there 🙂 on WP .. xxx

    • Thank you Doda for taking time to look around.. Yes I was in there yesterday as the weeds already had started to grow again and we weeded/hoed the whole lot over again.. I was beat yesterday.. 🙂 and its caught up with my arm muscles today 🙂

            • We get our ‘Manure’ from a local farm which is organic.. I still doubt sometimes the Manure, as cattle today are dossed up with all sorts of anti-biotics and vaccines etc.. But at least our veggies are then not sprayed with all the chemicals which farmers use along side the muck they spray onto their fields as well as.. The soil has to have some good Manure, and we give ours a good load, a whole trailer full every two years.. We spread on and let it soak in over winter and then dig in the spring before planting..
