Hello my fellow gardener’s, well it is June already, although someone forgot to tell Mother Nature, as the Temperature here in our part of the UK was 2 deg’s lower than on Christmas Day on June the 1st.
But it has not stopped the work going on in the Allotment Plot. Click onto photo’s to enlarge.
I have been weeding none stop every morning all week, while Hubby has dug the piece behind the shed, preparing it for butternut squash. We also put up a net around our redcurrents, and a lock was put in to stop the greenhouse door being opened.. Sadly we still have a thief who is helping themselves to various things, A fellow allotment holder a few plots away from us had his Green house heater stolen, ( while it was lit ) and they helped themselves to some slab stones. If they really want things a lock will not stop them but it makes things a bit more difficult to steal.
There has been lots of rain towards the end of May so its been good for the garden, meaning we have not had to carry buckets of water. The Brassica’s have all really grown.
The strawberry plants this year are doing much better than last year.. We dug up last years bed and repositioned it, and used the runners off of last years plants for the new plants.. They are coming into flower now. As are the Loganberries and the Raspberries.
Above you see the sweetcorn is now planted, we were a bit worried when the temperatures dropped, they have turned a little yellow since taking this photo but they are growing.. We have since added in front of it carrots of various colours. and some leeks
It has been a busy week with lots of aches, but I have slept like a baby.. Its been good to get back on the plot and get it looking more ship shape.
Have a wonderful weekend and
Happy Gardening!
~Sue~

One thing we can depend upon, Sue, is the weather. It’s never dependable! I must admit I haven’t noticed the cooler temperatures of late, but have seen the weather forecasts at times which made me wonder. Hope your crops grow big and your thief gets caught red-handed… stealing lit heaters. Is nothing safe?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Agreed Tom, nothing is safe if someone wants it they take it.. We get crops taken all the time when they mature.. And they help themselves to the biggest and best.. 😦 .. But we grow more than enough for our needs and our families, and give away excess..
You have to think like this. ( There Need was greater than my own _).. 🙂 and wish them well in life.. For all rebounds back eventually!..

It’s finally raining here on the East Coast Sue, after an El Nino that has had most of Australia in its drought grip for quite a while.
It is good to see lots of green in your garden, and healthy greens to, even after a cool dip in temperature.
You can sing them back to health as you work among them 🙂

Sue, I’ll gladly share a bit of our heat with you. We are experiencing late July or August weather with the temps hovering just below 90 (31.6C) i do hope your young plants do survive the cold. I wonder if you have any computer geeks at the allotment that would be willing to set up a secret camera to catch the thieves, something like a nanny cam. I hope for now your lock keeps them away from your tools.

I can relate to that Sue. At this time of year in the Adriatic Sea I’m picking my cukes and courgettes…yet while writing this post, I am in long tights and long sleeves. Although we do get some sunshine, we’ve had more rain. Normally we would be around 30C….right now it’s 21C on a sunny day. I notice that I can be out in the sun all day and not get a tan, strange things. We have had to move our gardenining 2 months ahead..meaning instead of sowing in March, we sow in May. Fall starts in December so we can now harvest and plant until then rather than September. ONe of these days I am going to post some of my garden for you to see! Love you Sue!

I would be putting up dummy cameras and a sign saying “You are being watched!” If I was your allotment. Even real cameras are not expensive these days and you would at least give the thieves something to think about. Our weather is lovely and wet and blustery, just the way winter should be. Last year was a terribly dry one and our summer seemed to go on forever and was much hotter than usual for Tasmania. I am guessing you are getting the flip side of that. Even if you don’t install cameras, put up a sign saying “Hidden cameras in the vicinity” and you might just see a drop in crime.

Now the hidden cameras in the vicinity Fran sounds a good idea.. I am sure I could find an official looking Sign on the net and print out and then laminate it. 🙂
Yes like I said to others our weather patterns seem really topsy turvy around the world right now.. 🙂 Hope all is well in your Sanctuary?? .. I popped by but no recent post, but as today is Sunday that may well all have changed LOL..

I have been really busy at TAFE this year, making sure that I keep a step ahead as we are studying technology and thats one of my blind spots so I am always on the back foot. Sanctuary is apparently surviving well despite a complete lack of care. We are about to tear most of her up and start again with a new system in a few weeks time but hopefully we are both over our colds by that stage as it is cold, wet and decidedly hostile outside at the moment (just how I like it 🙂 ). Poor Earl is sulking as it will be day 2 without his walk but thems the breaks really. I have a blog post almost ready to go and will post it sometimes soon. I am enjoying posting when I have something to say rather than on a schedule. It has put the joy back into blogging :). Try that sign idea Sue. You would be amazed what a well worded sign will do. How many people will jump over a fence with a “Beware dog” sign on the gate? Whether they ever see the dog or not, the threat is still there…

Nice to see all your plants thriving Sue. How sad about the thief. hope the lock deters him. Weather is crazy all round the world, were you are colder we have been hotter during autumn by 4-5 deg above average and only 17mm of rain when it is usually over 100mm in May. Then winter arrived with a vengeance over the weekend, horrific storms, torrential rain and winds and huge tides, Fortunately our part of the coast was not too badly affected, just had the benefit of all the rain. The garden is smiling and I have put the hose away for a while, but who knows what will come next…

Good to know though your part of the world was not badly affected..:-) Yesterday it was 25C here, a very different day on a cloudless sky 🙂 I soaked it up 🙂 xxx 😀

I always love a visit to your garden Sue. The farmers around us plant their corn as soon as the ground begins to warm up and it seems to withstand alot of late frost so I think yours will recover. When we had a community garden people stole all of my sunflower heads. They took tomatoes and other foods from everybody else. The garden was located in a public park, was fenced off but sometimes people would stop and ask if they could come and pick the garden-thinking “community” meant “free”. It wasn’t THAT kind of community garden and we would of shared had they asked. Its always sad when people steal just to steal however.

Hi dear Linda.. How are you?
So lovely to see you, and I have yet to catch up with your news.. I am less on my blog in Summer, and took a leaf out of the Universes lessons ( when my computer died the other week ) to spend more time in the garden, so the modem has been turned off for a few days..
Yes it is sad that people steal, when most of us would share when asked.. But isn’t that the state of the world.. ‘Greed!’ Wanting something even though not in need of it. It is Sad we have people who steal.. to get those things that they feel is their rights to HAVE.. Yet they know nothing of the effort gone into producing such things..
Which is why I can often get upset when Nature is so blatantly destroyed, And the knock on effect it then has upon habitat etc.
Sending you Love.. ❤ Sue xx

I always remember that scene in Silence of the Lambs where Hanibal gets agent Starling to realize that a murderer “covets”……I think we can take the word “murderer” out and say thieves or people in general covet. If we didn’t covet we wouldn’t steal. Its sad to me because people can learn to garden or they can ask as you said. I’d of shared.

Wow, things are progressing; you are sure to have a delicious summer! Weeding is hard on the body, but so necessary. It is the part I dislike the most of gardening. So sorry about the person’s heater being stolen…and while it was lit, wow!

Hi Suzi.. thank you so much for taking the time to visit my Gardening Blog.. Yes it is amazing what gets stolen..
We had some plastic piping stolen last year, it was distinctive and my husband spotted where it was taken.. a few plots down.. So he fetched it back. He also let it be known we knew!.. And told the allotment supervisor. But nothing was done.
The plot holders are a couple of young lads, who do not do a lot of work on their plot.. We have our suspicions as to where the heater has gone too.. But without proof you can do nothing.. We think this is where peoples crops are going.
I do not mind weeding if I am honest Suzi , though not as much as I have done this past few weeks, which have left my arms aching and hands swollen.. But now most of the tough things are out, I can keep hoeing which is better..
I am having a weekend off from the garden 🙂 As the rain now tumbles down.. 🙂 Xxx Sue
